Aunty Kali McBride, Galibal Elder, experienced in burning from a young age, has been learning more about Indigenous Burning techniques from Victor Stephensen for some years. Because of the many waterways on the property, it is a woman's traditional role to burn there so Aunty Kali led the way. She is also passionate about edible native foods so she propagates plants for after the burn. Because it has been many years without any burning, the trees need some cleaning up. Her partner, Uncle Steve, is helping.
Indigenous people have been managing their Country in Australia for many thousands of years using cool burning techniques. Aunty explains some of the principles as she starts the burn. It's like the old days when she spots smoke. A neighbour is burning as well.
Aunty Kali gives more information about Cultural Burning to one of the landholders. She points out different burning techniques and what to look for after a successful burn.
This project received grant funding from the Australian Government's investment in bushfire recovery for wildlife and their habitats.
